Simple Elastic Skirt Tutorial

Tutorials are on their way! Once I had posted the patterns I made available, I was made aware that some people were unsure how to use them. The purpose of this blog is to help anyone feel like they can take a try at making cute things for their nuiMOs. So here is the first of many tutorials to come.

If you want to make a simple, flirty skirt this is one of the best ways to go. It's definitely the fastest item to make as it has the fewest steps. You should be able to do all of these steps either by hand or using a sewing machine.

Here's what you'll need:

  • Fabric 3.5" x 12" (or whatever length depending on how full you want the skirt)
  • 1/4" Elastic about 4.75" long
  • Thread
  • Safety Pin

The first thing to do is to cut out everything you need. The above picture is showing how long the piece of fabric will be for the skirt.

The next step is to sew a hem on the bottom part of the skirt. As you can see from the photos above the hem isn't very wide, about 1/4" double rolled over. The second photo is what your skirt should look like at this point.

The next part is to create the casing for the top of the skirt. (You'll see why it's called casing in the next step.) In this part you will move your needle on the machine to it's left position. Then you fold over the fabric 1/4" and then as wide as your presser foot. Just sew straight down. Again, the second photo shows what your skirt should look like right now.

You are going to use your safety pin to feed the elastic piece through the casing on the top of the skirt. (See? It's encases the elastic.) Make sure that you don't lose your elastic inside of the casing. If you do, you'll have to do it all over again.

Make sure to line up the elastic to the edges of the skirt.

Then sew along the edge of the skirt with the right sides of the fabric facing each other. Put a few extra stitches where the elastic is to give it extra strength and ensure that the stitches won't pop when stretching.

Turn your skirt right side out and you're done! You now have a cute skirt for your nuiMOs. Be sure to share and tag @disneynuimosdiy on Instagram or in the comments here your creations. Have fun crafting!
