Elastic Pants Tutorial

Continuing on with tutorials next is pants. These can also be found with the patterns previously shared. In this tutorial I'm using the regular pants pattern, but you can do the same steps to make the baggy pants.

Here's what you'll need:

  • Fabric for four pieces of pants pattern
  • 1/4" Elastic about 4.75" in length
  • Thread
  • Safety Pin

As an extra bonus for this tutorial, I chose a fabric that has a direction to it. If I cut some of the pattern pieces the wrong way, then I would have the patterns going in different directions. So if you do the same, then you have to make sure to do the same steps.

To begin, you'll have to cut out four pieces of fabric big enough for the pattern to fit on. Flip two of the pieces over on their long edges and put them underneath the other two pieces.

Now take two pieces and put it underneath the other pieces. Pin the pattern in place and cut. After cutting you should have four pieces that look like the third picture above. Notice how the fabric pattern goes in the same direction.

The first seam to sew is the two inseams on the patterns. Put the right sides together and sew a small seam. You'll see in the second photo above on what I mean how small. I use the width from the needle to the right edge of the opening on the presser foot.

The next seam is the U part. Again, put the right sides together and sew along the curve using the same width for the seam allowance as the inseam.

Now you need to hem the bottoms of the shorts. This hem is only one fold.

Move around the until you get the side seams touching. Make sure the right sides are touching and sew down one of the sides.

The next step is to make the casing for the elastic. Fold down the top on the entire piece once the width of the presser foot. Make sure your needle is positioned to the left and sew down. As you're sewing make sure that the seams line up because the top of the pattern is a bit wider than the rest. The second photo above is what the pants should look like at this point.

Use the safety pin to guide the elastic through the casing. Make sure that you don't lose the elastic and line it up wit the edge of the shorts.

Sew along the edge, putting a few extra stitches where the elastic is to give it strength so the stitches don't pop.

Turn the pants right side out and you're done! You have made a cute pair of pants for your nuiMOs. Be sure to share your creations on @disneynuimosdiy on Instagram or here in the comments. Have fun crafting!

  1. Could you put measurements as well on the patterns or a scale? Not sure if I am getting the correct measurements printing on A4 paper. Thanks!
